Barod, University of South Wales and London Metropolitan University have once again teamed up to bring Street Drugs back to Wales. Following the success of the 2019 event, and the countless Street Drug Discussion webinars over the last few years, we are excited to bring some of the UK’s leading people regarding harm reduction, back to Cardiff. The theme for the latest Streets Drugs event is showcasing how embedding harm reduction into the heart of the night-time economy, can help reduce harms associated to substance use.
Doors will open from 10am for refreshments with the conference and welcoming address commencing at 10.30am. The conference will end at 4.30pm. Please bring your confirmation email with you, preferably digitally to help us reduce our use of paper. There will be a buffet lunch and refreshments breaks during the conference.

Adam is a Consultant Addiction Psychiatrist and Addiction Medicine specialist based in London. He works for a number of treatment providers across the UK. He is an active clinician, educator and researcher, having published over 180 papers on everything from opioid treatment and service delivery to dark net drug markets, health messaging, drug education, sex and drugs, drug policy, cannabis, novel drugs, ketamine, nitrous and psychedelics. He is also founder of the Global Drug Survey and creator of the Staying Safe Program – SSP (www.stayingsafe.university). SSP V3 launches in Sept 2024 along with a new programme for parents (www.stayingsafeparents.com). He’s run services in the community, hospitals and prisons. He is passionate about harm reduction and developing effective treatment structures that have patients needs at their core. He believes honest non-judgemental information delivered with humour and credibility is the foundation for people making informed decisions about their health and well being. CEO, The Loop
Katy is a nurse and worked in HIV services (Mildmay Hospital), substance use treatment (South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, City Roads Crisis Intervention, Cranstoun Drug Services) and homelessness (Thames Reach), both as practitioner and in senior roles, as manager and director. Katy has also taken on voluntary roles related to mental health and homelessness as Governor for Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust, and for the past 7 years, and continuing, as Trustee/Vice Chair for Depaul UK.
With extensive experience in working across health & social care services, collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders from voluntary sector partners, to Public Health, Local Authorities, and newly formed Integrated Care Systems, Katy is committed to developing and expanding the services and reach of The Loop to ensure our drug checking service and harm reduction advice and information is accessible and available nationally.
Project Team Manager – Drugs, Threats, Harms and Trends – Public Health Wales
Dean’s role primarily involves the management of the WEDINOS project. WEDINOS provides for the collection and testing of psychoactive substances, the profiling of a substances chemical structure and the dissemination of pragmatic harm reduction advice.
Dean has extensive experience working within the Criminal Justice System and in the field of substance misuse, with specific interests in the trends in psychoactive substance and image and performance enhancing drug use on a regional, national and international level.
Dean has field research experience in relation to severe infections and pseudoaneurysm’s amongst injecting drug users; Image and Performance Enhancing Drugs; and in relation to individuals who have administered naloxone.
Rave Aid Crew
With 8 years’ experience in the field, Josh works in both drug policy and frontline harm reduction. He is currently finishing up his PhD on drug diversion schemes and runs a grassroots organisation that provides welfare and harm reduction advice at illegal raves across the UK (but often in Wales). Among other things, he is particularly passionate about uplifting treatment engagement among club drug cohorts.
PsyCare UK
Amanda is a trustee and member of the senior management team of the welfare and harm reduction charity, PsyCare UK. Amanda has been involved in PsyCare for over a decade and has a wealth of first hand experience supporting people through challenging psychedelic and other drug experiences. She has coordinated the welfare provision at dozens of UK festivals and has years of experience managing the charity’s response to a wide range of difficult presentations.
Young Person’s Service Manager, CAVDAS
Anna has worked in the substance use field for 25 years in a variety of settings including in patient detox. Needle syringe provisions and criminal justice services. For the last 15 years Anna has worked in children, Young persons and family and concerned other services.
Anna has worked in CAVDAS, Cardiff & Vale Drug and Alcohol services for the last two years where she has helped in the development of the CYP and FCO teams. These teams now have their own dedicated base, designed specifically for young people and family members. Anna is helping to coordinate the team who will be delivering the work within the night time economy.
Close Protection Officer & doorman
Mike Lewis has been a doorman in nightclubs across Cardiff City Centre for 20 years. Mike is also a close protection officer and has had a variety of roles in different security settings. Mike has previously volunteered in a CYP substance use service and has a keen interest in this field. Mike currently works in one of the busiest venues in Cardiff where they see a high number of students as customers. Mike is keen to be part of this joint working with CAVDAS and the Night time economy.
Founder, Co-alc Alliance
Lived Experience in Suicide and Self Harm, Asist and Samaritan trained. I created the Co-alc Alliance in 2021 to represent bereaved parents in improving the research, awareness and lack of service provision for recreational users of (powder) cocaine and links to non-premeditated suicide during the comedown.
